Gris Gris beach

Updated: September 6, 2024

Gris Gris Beach is located on the southern coast of Mauritius and is not for swimming. Visitors come here to be inspired by the powerful waves crashing against the giant rocks of Gris Gris - unlike many other beaches on the island, where coral reefs protect the shore, the beach is open to the ocean. Here you can walk along the shore, listen to the roar of the ocean and feel the fresh sea breeze.

One of the main attractions of the area is a point called “Weeping Rock” (La Roche Qui Pleure). This is a place where the waves hit the rocks with force, creating the illusion of a “crying” rock, which attracts many tourists who want to see this natural phenomenon.

There is no tourist infrastructure in the form of restaurants or stores, which emphasizes its secluded nature. However, the nearby village of Souillac has several cafes and places to rest if you want to grab a bite to eat after your walk.

Gris Gris is the perfect place for those looking for pristine nature, rough ocean and scenery away from the tourist crowds. This beach is especially appealing to those who want to see the wild, untamed side of Mauritius.

To reach the beach, you'll have to take a dirt road through several private sugar cane fields. Along the way, you'll come across hand-painted signs that will tell you the way to the coast.
