Sri Prakash Vishwanath Mandir is one of the largest and most important Hindu temples in Mauritius, located in a village near Port Louis. This temple is considered the spiritual center for the Hindu community on the island and plays a key role in the religious life of local believers. It is dedicated to the god Shiva, one of the main gods of Hinduism, who represents destruction and rebirth.

History and significance

The Sri Prakash Vishwanath Mandir Temple was built in 1980 in the classical Hindu style, with tiered towers decorated with carvings and sculptures of deities, and has since become an important pilgrimage site for Hindus in Mauritius. It is dedicated to Shiva in his Vishwanatha form, which means “Lord of the Universe” in Sanskrit. The temple 

The temple has become a popular venue for major Hindu festivals and rituals such as Maha Shivaratri and Diwali, which attract thousands of devotees from all over the island. Many religious ceremonies are held at the temple every year to celebrate various Hindu festivals.

Architecture

The temple is designed in the traditional Hindu architectural style, with colorful elements typical of South Indian temples. The building is decorated with many statues depicting Shiva and other gods of the Hindu pantheon such as Parvati, Ganesha and Hanuman. The interior of the temple is also impressive - the prayer halls are decorated with paintings, wood carvings and colorful murals depicting scenes from Indian mythology.

The entrance to the temple is guarded by statues of sacred animals, and in the center of the temple complex is the lingam (the sacred symbol of Shiva), which is the main object of worship.

Religious significance

The Sri Prakash Vishwanath Mandir temple is an important place for Hindu rituals and ceremonies. Important rituals such as:

  • Puja: Daily ceremonies of worshiping deities where offerings in the form of fruits, flowers and incense are made.
  • Maha Shivaratri: One of the major Hindu festivals dedicated to Shiva.  During this time, thousands of pilgrims come to the temple to offer prayers and participate in night rituals.
  • Diwali: The festival of lights celebrated by Hindus in Mauritius with special rituals and festivities.

How to get there

The temple is located in the village of Triolet, on the northwest coast of Mauritius, 5 km from the capital Port Louis. The drive from Port Louis takes about 15 minutes. The temple is located on one of the main streets of the village, so it will not be difficult to find it.
