Pointe d’Esny Beach is one of the most appealing places on the south-east coast of Mauritius. It sits close to Mahebourg and Blue Bay, yet the atmosphere feels quieter and more residential. There is no long strip of beach bars or loud resort activity here. The main reasons to come are the pale sand, the clear lagoon and the gentle rhythm of a beach day that does not need much planning once you arrive.

The beach is a good choice for travellers who want beauty without a busy resort scene. Near the shore, the water is often shallow and calm, with colours shifting from glassy blue to bright turquoise. Pointe d’Esny works well for swimming, slow walks, reading in the shade and relaxed snorkelling rather than for a full-service beach club experience.

Why Visit Pointe d’Esny

The strongest feature of Pointe d’Esny is its natural, low-key feel. The shoreline runs past villas and greenery, so it feels more like a peaceful coastal neighbourhood than a commercial beach. The sand is soft, the entry into the water is gradual, and the lagoon helps soften the ocean swell. Families may enjoy it too, provided they bring water, snacks and sun protection.

It is also a lovely beach for walking. Early morning is especially rewarding, with softer light, clearer-looking water and fewer people. Later in the day, pay attention to wind and tide, as conditions in shallow lagoons can change. For swimming, choose sandy patches with good visibility and avoid going too far out if the wind or current becomes stronger.

Facilities and Comfort

Pointe d’Esny should not be treated as a beach with developed public facilities. Do not count on showers, toilets, sunbed rental or a steady choice of cafes directly on the sand. That lack of infrastructure is part of the charm, but it means you should arrive prepared. Bring drinking water, reef-conscious sun protection, a hat, a light snack and a towel or beach mat.

Shade is not guaranteed along every part of the beach. If you plan to stay for several hours, arrive in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun feels less harsh. Water shoes can be useful if you are sensitive to coral pieces or uneven patches, although many parts of the lagoon have a comfortable sandy bottom.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach Pointe d’Esny is by car or taxi. The beach is close to the airport and Mahebourg, which makes it easy to include in a south-east Mauritius itinerary. Public access to the shore is limited to a few passages between private properties, so use marked or obvious access points and avoid crossing villa grounds.

Parking depends on the time of day and season. Roadside spaces can fill up on weekends and holidays, so arriving early makes the visit easier. Many travellers combine Pointe d’Esny with Mahebourg, Blue Bay or a short scenic drive along the south-east coast.

Practical Tips

Choose Pointe d’Esny if you value quiet water, clean sand and a beach that feels pleasantly undeveloped. If you need restaurants, toilets, rentals and a livelier scene, nearby Blue Bay will be more convenient. If you are happy to bring your own essentials, Pointe d’Esny can be one of the most memorable lagoon beaches on the island.

Respect the private homes near the beach, take your rubbish with you and avoid stepping on coral. The south-east coast is beautiful because it still feels delicate and natural, and careful behaviour helps keep it that way.
